Default header install question

I am FINALLY installing my longtubes this weekend!

Two things I want to avoid in order of priority:

1) breaking a header bolt off into the block

2) having the headers come loose

How tight should I tighten the header bolts? Bassani directions don't say. Is there a torque spec? And if there is - I am skeptical that I could fit a torque wrench where the header bolts are.

Help me out here.

you need to buy yourself a manual buddy. they will give you the torque specs and what not.

There is a torque spec for the manifold bolts, but like you mentioned, it will be quite difficult getting a torque wrench on all the bolts/studs.
It's 25Nm or 18ft/lbs for the V-8.
I tightened mine down & did not use a torque wrench. I've gone back twice & checked for tightness & have not had any loosen up.

Why didn't I think of that. Right here on page 27 & 28 - http://iihs.net/fsm/?dir=159&viewfile=Engine.pdf

Answer...18 lb-ft for the nuts that go on to the studs. That's half the answer.

The other question is how much to tighten the studs that go into the block (the studs that the aforementioned nuts go on top of). Must not be very tight because those studs only have a 4mm head on them.

I also noticed the cam overs only have 89 lb-inches (not lb-ft) on them. That's not tight at all.

I'm scared to death of over-tightening a stud into the aluminum block. Would be a serious #*$%^ to strip out a header stud hole.

Thanks for that.

Silly question here - but how tight would you say you got them? "Real tight" as in you really beared down on it? Or just "kinda tight".

Looking for something to go on here.

you could set a torque wrench to 18 ft/lbs and try to tighten something like maybe a wheel nut..that way you could try to judge what 18 lbs feels like and go from there....i dont know if that will give you a good feel for the amount....just an idea i had

Kinda tight...little more than snug.

Shane I was wondering because I am going to be putting on my JBA long tubes soon if you are going to change the motor mounts like they recommend? Let me know how the install goes so I have an Idea what I'm in for.
Thanks

I did not change the motor mounts, and I never saw that was recommended for these headers.

More info on my install here - https://mustangforums.com/forum/4-6l...n-day-1-a.html
