At the end of the day, you can make anything fast given enough money and time.
However, if you compare imports of similar price to a Mustang GT, we fair very well in acceleration. In fact, I challenge someone to find a brand new car with a faster 1/4 for less money.
The 2010 GT500 with 540hp dominates it's price range for power/speed.

I'm trying to think of cars as fast as a Mustang GT for the same price. When I was looking at the leftover 09 GT's they were going for around $22,000. So let's count how many other NEW cars there are that make 300hp, are RWD and run off 87 Octane? Zero?
Now, lets take a few things out of my criteria. How about high 13/low 14 1/4 times for $22,000 or so? The Mazdaspeed 3, Cobalt SS and WRX. Two of them are FWD so I can't say I'm terribly interested and the current 08-09 WRX's are having massive engine failures according to the 100+ page thread on NASIOC. All of these cars run on 91 Octane as well.
So I'm really trying to find the problem here. Mustangs are dirt cheap, run on **** and are cheap to upgrade. Sure there are other cars that are the same speed, but I don't know if I care that much. Before this car, I was a Honda guy and with a few mods it was fun to chase down the 04 and older Mustangs but at the end of the day they still had torque, a comfy cruiser and RWD.
I think the basis of the problem is people expect too much from Mustangs. They've never been at the top of the heap. It's a rather "middle-of-the-pack" car that just happens to have tons of character.

There really is no other car out there with more character at this stage in the game. The s197 brought back the american muscle car wars. It is not an import and IMO that is something to be proud of as an american. And to top it off it looks better than any other car on the road. And none of those cars will ever sound as good as ours
