Default Chrome GT Wheels

Has anyone purchased a set of chrome P/N M-1007-178C GT wheels from Ford? These appear to be chrome versions of the stock GT wheel. Ford wants over $300 a piece for them (bend over)[:'(]. Is there an aftermarket version of this wheel or has anyone gotten a reasonable discount on them Summit or other?

Default RE: POLISHED GT Wheels

Hello,

Mine are POLISHED GT 17" wheels from Ford, and I love them! They were much cheaper than the chrome ones by Ford. I originally had my dealer order them, but they were back-ordered. I ended up spending $50 more total (vs the dealer) by going through a local tire distributor (Sports Car Tire, Wilmington, DE). I also got my 17" Pirellis throught them at the same time, and I sold them my stock 16" wheels/tires ($60 each if I remember correctly). I am VERY pleased with my polished 17" Bullits (they look like the old Cragar SS's), but I am VERY unhappy with Ford for offering nearly the same wheel (in 18") as an option on the GT's. My polished 17's had been distinctive, but soon the new GT's will be running around with the same style wheel that I opted for. [sm=headbang.gif] You may want to take that into consideration before you buy your wheels.

Default RE: Chrome GT Wheels

Do you currently have the GT wheels and want chrome or do you have the V6 wheels? If you already have the GT wheels, here's a suggestion:

My car came with the standard gray GT wheels with the aluminum lip. I found a place here in SoCal where I can take them to have them stripped and chrome plated for under $150 each. My car has metallic black stripes so what I'm going to do is to have them chrome the wheels, then paint or powder coat the spoke areas to match the stripes. I'll be doing that in about a week. I also have chrome BRS spinners that I'm going to install at the same time. Should look pretty custom! [sm=bling.gif] I'll post pics when it's all done.

If you don't have the GT wheels, check wheel threads in this and other forums. Many times people who are going to bigger aftermarket wheels will sell their stock GT wheels, cheap. Then, you can have them chromed or polished. Just some ideas for you. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. There are several sites that offer 17"X9" Chrome Bullitt wheels for around $180/wheel. These appear to be similar to the stock GT wheels except that they are 1" wider. Not sure if there is an issue mounting the stock GT Pirelli's on a wider wheel.

Experience? Opinions?

'06 GT Premium, 5 spd, Vista Blue, Roush underdrive pulleys (so far).

I would NOT recommend putting the stock P235/55-ZR17 size tire on a wider 9" rim. The stock tire is barely wide enough (my opinion) on the 8" rim. I say this because there is not a lot of rubber extending beyond the rim, which means a curb-scrape would gouge the wheel. Plus, a wider tire looks better on these retro cars. I wish I would have opted for a wider tire - along the lines of a 255-45 (I'm not sure that's an avail size, but it shows the aspect ratio relationship). Assuming (!) you have stock 17" tires and want to reuse them, I would recommend either going with an 8" wheel, or consider selling your old 17" wheels & tires as a set and getting something wider to go on the 17"x9" wheels. Let us know what you decide.
