ORIGINAL: grasshopper

I just put my Airaid in this afternoon. I never consider an intake a performance mod since the increase, if any, is so small... so, the induction noise is my reason for doing it. And it does sound a lot meaner too, with stock exhaust. When I want more power, I'll do "real" mods like a blower or cams. If you are at the drags every weekend and ETs run your life, then the better intakes would make more sense.
Not sure I follow your logic regarding what a "real mod" is, the CAI is a very important first step, not considering one a "real mod" makes no sense at all to me. Being able to get about 20rwhp is not at all bad for the money and delivers better ecomony as well as better performance.

Not sure why anybody would buy an intake for anything but a performance/mpg increase, I can't imagine spending hard earned money on an intake for the "look" of it, if not for more performance/mpg then why bother at all? Why not get the most bang for your buck? If you didn't because of the cost, that's a valid reason, but the one you state doesn't make sense.

I was being partly sarcastic, which is why there were quotes around it. Intakes are valid, useful additions, but they are stepping stones. Forced induction, strokers, heads, cams, is what I consider "real" mods, 'cos while the bang for the buck may be less, the ceiling is much higher.
