6cyl to 302 Converison
Im currently swappingthe 6cyl in my 1966 coupe to a 302 out of a 1970 Coupe. However, Im not going to use the Power Steering. Does anyone know what size fan belt I have to use now that I’m not using the PS. I’ve tried a couple of sizes and they appear loose. Should I leave the pump on, not connected, so that I can adjust the tension?
Several ways to do it. Many engines had a separate belt driving ONLY the pump; leave it off. On others the "wrap" of the belt becomes important on the pulleys to avoid undetected slippage while running; eats belts and pulleys. V-belts are far worse than Serpentine belts, which are much flatter, thinner sides, less side rubbing in grooves.
The alternator deserves the most "wrap", near 180 degrees if possible; it is the toughest accessory being driven, along with A/C compressor, which often has it's own belt. Way back then, Ford made multi-groove pulleys for the crankshaft end. I have opted to go with Serpentine when possible. Most run in reverse, requiring different front timing cover, reverse fan blade and clutch if used, sometimes changes to radiator inlet and outlet positions.
