I bought a 1999 mustang get. The owner’s dad had done an engine swap and put a 4.6 cobra motor in it. He said it was a 1998-2004 motor. Is there a way I can find out the exact year?

 

I believe the main external difference between the 4.6 GT & 4.6 Cobra engine is the GT uses a 4.6 SOHC 2 valves per cylinder engine with a cast iron block while the Cobra uses a 4.6 DOHC 4 valves per cylinder engine with a aluminum block,so if your block is cast iron,its not a Cobra engine.96-01 Cobras used aluminum block then switched to cast iron in 03-04.The following link will help you inspect your engine to id its year.Quite a bit of info to look over here.
