Default Coolant temperature sensor

I have a 351W that has started over heating. A mechanic told me it might be the temperature sensor is going bad. He also told me that the older cast iron engines should use a particular style or type of coolant sensor. If this is correct can someone tell me what type I need to buy.

Welcome,

After 30+ Years in Dealership FORD Parts I Saw Many Sender Issues Were Simply Poor Aftermarket Parts. Fords Seemed To Always be Hypersensitive To These Components. If a Factory Unit is Available FORD/MOTORCRAFT I Would Use That. If You Want to Give Your Vehicle Application I Maybe Able To Come Up With a Suitable Unit. If You Have a Laser Temp Gun or Know Anybody That Does You Might Check For Actual Temperature of Engine as Well!

I do have a laser temp gun but have not had a chance to use it. I am not sure what you are asking for regarding vehicle application. The engine was swapped into a 1967 Mustang prior to the seller getting the car. At this time it is a driveable work in progress, being used for club activities and car shows. Most of the driving is between 55 and 60mph. The mechanic suggested a temp gun also and a regular thermometer. Thank you for your response.

No Worries,

I had No Idea What Car You Had Just That it Had a 351W in it. Sender Needs To Match Car Gauge. Here is a Scott Drake Repop Which is The Best Available and Was Used in 60's Mustangs With a 289 & 351. So This Should Be The One! I had The Same Swap in My 68 Cougar Back in The Late 70's Btw! I Would Have Preferred a New or NOS From Ford For The Best But You Don't Always Have That Option. Also To Check Temp on Car With Gun I Would Have it Completely Warmed Up And Point At Thermostat Housing.
