new 67 pony...
hello everyone... im actually new to the mustang community... always a fan but never had the pleasure of having one... i just bought a 67 mustangfastback with a 289 stock engine and i am getting it replaced with a 390 stock engine off a thunderbird... now the engine will most likely need to be rebuild... my question to all that can help me is ; as long as i'm rebuilding the engine i want to increase the performance, but my budget is low.... what do you recommend i do (so i can buy the parts and give to my mechanic) to it to increase the performance and power... my ultimate goal is to turn it into a shelby replica... although i have a lot to go through before it becomes that ... but before i worry about the outside look i want the engine to be in great condition and move from there... any advice is greatly appriciated... also if you know of a good mechanic to do the work at a low price in the los angeles area can you let me know...
i really want to thank you all in advance for your advice and help

There are a ton of things you *can* do, but are you sure you *should* do them? The 390 was an awesome engine in its day, but there is a reason they didn't last. They're big, heavy, and not very efficient. There is not a big aftermarket for that engine, either.
I'm at about 2 1/2 years into building a 1968 coupe, and I went with something similar to this: http://www.pawinc.com/351W.html
I knew I was going to rebuild the engine, so I just got the whole kit and had a mechanic I trust do it.
If you are on a really tight budget, you could get one of these: http://www.fordracingparts.com/crate...smallblock.asp
This is a *new* 351W from Ford Racing for less than $2900 that will Just Work(TM) for you, and it has all the potential in the world for modification later on as you get more money.
Bottom line is, the 390 is going to be a real pain to fix up, and it's never going to be a stellar performer. A modern 351W will be easy to get parts for, easy to work on, easy to upgrade and a joy to drive.
Hope this is helpful!
