Default 1965 mustang 289 rpm problem

I installed a tach on my 289 and it has read fast since day one. The other day I hooked a dwell meter up and noticed the tach was reading at the right rpm? When I disconnected the meter it read high again?

Does your tach have a switch in the back for switching between 4,6,8 cylinders ?
