Default Winter Tires

Hi fellas,

I have a 2006 V6 Premium Mustang with the Pony Package--which I belive comes with the 17" wheels fitted with P235/55 ZR 17 inch tires. So now we are starting to see the first snow flakes of winter here in Detroit, MI, and I am looking to get the winter tires on my car asap.... I went on tirerack and priced out the following:

http://www.tirerack.com/snow/WinterP...6&autoModClar=

It's the Bridgestone Blizzak Revo 1 tires 215/65-16 ($376) + Steel wheels ($216) + the optional wheel covers ($32) = $624 (total)

Firstly, is this a good deal?? Second, do I (or is it a recommended idea) to buy the wheels and tires together, or can I simply buy 17" tires and save money by using the same wheels???? Lastly, does the tread wear out easily on the Blizzak Revo 1?? I was planning/hoping to drive down to Florida in my car using these winter tires from Detroit, and back, and wondering whether the tread would run out real fast if running the tires on the dry roads down south???? Lastly, would regular tire shops (such as GoodYear or Belle Tire) match Tire rack.com's prices????

Would appreciate any help!!!! Thanks much!!!!

Yah the snow is sweet.......I live on the west side of the state and so get to see all the lake effect. The Bilzzaks are a wonderful tire and definitely will cut through the snow. Belle tire is usually real good about making you a good deal, so I would definitely bring any pricing to their attention. They should be competitive about getting your business. Getting a seperate set of wheels would make the changes easier so that you could have a seperate set of summer wheel/tires and winter wheel/tires. The tread compound is fairly soft on the blizzaks so if it was me I would run your stock tires for the florida drive. As soon as you get out of the Michigan area the roads I am sure would be dry enough that they would be just fine. Hope that helps some.

Hi skysurf , I think it a good deal, most places around here (ct.) all over $700. for wheels and tires. I did get them from tire rack.
But did not get the covers. There on the car now. Not sure I would dive that far on them. Got them for same price plus $79. for shiping. Like dean53 said two sets are nice. Just picture a big scratch on your wheels from someone in a rush to change your tires.

I've always had 2 sets and it's so much easier. Plus you won't end up saving much if you have to pay to have the tires switched out and balanced twice a year.

Yep... winter is here in Michigan... Blizzaks are great tires... I've used them before and need to order some for the Mistress... I've had great luck with Discount Tire. I stopped in yesterday and they told me they would match TireRack's pricing! If possible I would pick up a set of wheels... it does make it less of a hassle... now when I had my 2002 GT i didn't have an extra set of rims.. so i had them throw in 3 years of tire swapping! I only had the car for 2 winters though. I still have the Blizzaks and they have a LOT of tread left after 2 years and have probably 10,000 to 12,000 miles on them... If your just making a trip to florida and back I wouldn't worry about doing with your snow tires on...
