I have an appointment tomorrow morning to get the 255/45's put on. I must say that the increased acceleration with these tires is a lot of fun though. I'm just not sure it's worth sacrificing the look of the car for.
The safety issue is the most important. A tire that is too small can be dangerous, as the smaller the tire, the lower the safe load carrying capacity.

Also, the shorter the sidewall, the more impact from potholes, etc., is being sent to the rim, increasing the likelihood of having expensive wheels damaged/bent.

If safety is a major issue, why do people run the low profile tires on the 20" rims? After driving with the 255/45's for a few days now, I have to say the 255/40's handle much better. I am thinking about switching to the 40's for good and getting the speedometer recalibrated.
