Wheel and Tire Question PLEASE HELP
I just ordered 18X9 wheels and am looking for tires now. I have a 2007 Gt that is lowered (Eibach Prokit 1in and a quarter front and 1in and a half rear). Right now i have 20X9 rims with 255/45/R20 front and 275/35/R20 rear (Nitto 555). My question is will 245/40R18 front and 295/35R18 (or 285/35R18) rear fit the nine inch rim? Is the 245 to 295 or 285 too much of a difference? thanks for the help
Go to TireRack and check specs on the tire you want to run (or the manufacturers website). They'll indicate a range of wheel widths for the size you are considering.
Generally, there are a couple of rules of thumb to know:
1. Lots of things will "fit" or can be "made to fit" despite factory/manuf. recommendations.
2. Plenty of the above are sub-optimal across a variety of performance parameters. "Fit" does not equal "work well."
3. "Not working well" does not equal "death trap." When we say it won't work well, often we mean it won't do what it could do in a max effort context. Things can "fit" "not work well" and be quite livable for many folks.
4. Regarding tires, a larger aspect ratio tends to admit a wider range of wheel widths.
The 245/40-18 will easily fit on a 9" wheel, and it may be that this is the measured rim width for the tire. I'm going to guess that the 285s and 295s fall out of range for a 9" wide wheel. Again, will they "fit," sure probably. Will they work as intended or to their best capacity, not very likely at all. Your call.
As for the switch from 245 front to 285 rear, the difference here doesn't matter to the wheels and what they'll accept. That split is not the best for cornering handling on our cars, but I can't say if that matters to you at all. Will you be able to drive the car to work and back? Sure. And if you don't care about handling you likely won't notice any bad effects anyway.
Again, lots of things can be made to fit, and if you are not interested in optimizing some performance aspect (you just want the look), lots of things will make you smile. Your choice.
Best,
