Those cars didn't have a way to bleed the air out. The best way I found is to raise the front of the vehicle so the air can rise up to the radiator cap. Open the cap and run the engine at idle until the thermostat opens, you should be able to see the level in the radiator drop as the air comes up. It might take a few times of this to get all the air out.

There's a small hollow on top of the thermostat housing that would be perfect for a bleeder. Sometimes it has a plug screwed into it, other times it's blocked off and would thus require drilling. It's there because that's where a temp sensor goes on some appplications. I'm seriously considering drilling & tapping the one on my '95 for a bleeder screw like this, maybe during my next coolant flush.

That's true. But installing a bleeder at the highest point in the system is a little more invasive, as it requires cutting into the upper radiator hose. They do make bleeder couplers for exactly that, but the end result is kind of ugly IMO. Screwing a bleeder into the top of the t-stat housing would look at lot cleaner, and while it won't get all of the air out, it will at least ensure that the thermostat is bathed in coolant while the engine burps the last of the excess air into the recovery tank.
