Default Key issues

BuzzBatI'm trying to help a friend with a 95 3.8. His only key has disappeared, and he was given two keys by a locksmith. When we try to start the car with one key, the dash lights come on but as soon as it rotates toward start, everything goes dead. Is this a chip key? We don't have the other key right now but will try that later on. Is the 95 a chip key type? Thanks in advance. We actually tried the other new key with the same results so it seems like some other electrical issue. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Where should we check the grounds?

IMO, the computer recognized the lost key, but does not do so with the new keys. The locksmith should have warned you about this. The Ford Dealer can program your new keys to work, but it will cost dearly. I cannot tell you which stage of PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) Mustang used in '95, but there were at least 3 with Explorers, and I've labored with the latest. The level used in my '04 Explorer absolutely cannot be bypassed, at least by the do it yourselfer.

How to originate a key into a PATS 1 vehicle:
  1. Insert a properly cut transponder key into the ignition cylinder and turn it to the ON (Run) position. You will see the security light blinking for 15 minutes and go out.
  2. Once the theft light has went out you have 5 minutes to turn the key to the OFF position.
  3. Turn the same key back to the ON position. The security light will blink for 15 minutes and go out.
  4. Once the theft light has went out for the second time you have 5 minutes to turn the key to the OFF position.
  5. Turn the same key back to the ON position. The security light will blink for 15 minutes and go out.
  6. Turn the key to the OFF position and back to ON and verify that the security light goes out. The key is now programmed. All other keys have been erased out of the system
Takes 45 minutes to program a new key.
