Default 86 heads

Hey guys im new here and any help would be greatly appreciated!

i have an 86 gt that im fixing up and am on a tight budget (college student). im aware that the stock heads on an 86mustang are a little restrictive and held back horsepower to 200 for that year. the following year horsepower went up to 225. i have recently read that they changed the heads in 87 to what they were putting on efi 5.0L f-150s. it just so happens that i have a once running 1991 f-150..im assuming the heads arnt cracked or anything....will these heads work on an 86 5.0 H0? how much horsepower will i gain?

any info, opinions,or ideas ould be great, thanks

they will workon there they are the e7 heads , you will get a bit of a gain but it would be like a stock 87 5.0. best bet is the gt40p head for more power and low cost . they are available on the 97 1/2 eplorer and mountaineer.

no no. stop. The 86 mustang has different heads cause of the pistons installed in them stock, asssuming ur motor is the original stock motor. They are the E6 heads and b/c the pistons in the motor are completely flat tops no other head, except the trick flow twisted wedge head, will work on this stock bottom end. no not the e7's nor the gt40's
or p's nor afr's.

thank you for your help ih8chevy. my engine is pretty rough. i bought the car off a guy who justdragged racedit up and down his road against his other buddies 5.0 never had it legaly on the road. looks like he never even changed the oil once. so needless to say shes got some knocks. im gonna do a basic rebuild this summer. i diddnt know if the heads off of my junk 91F150 would be worth throwing on while ive got her all torn apart. thanks again for the advice

the stock e7's, which is what the truck heads are, are not worth a sh*t. It will take some time and money invested in them to make em work good. Talk to Buddy Rawls, he deals mainly with stock headed 5.0's. He has gotten some in the tens with ported e7's n/a. He is a cam grinder. If you arent willing to put the money into em, i dont blame you, then a cheaper yet still effective route is the gt40 series, the P heads require different headers due to the slightly raised exhaust port.

hope this helps.

now didn't you just say that all these heads won't work on a 86 bottom end now you are sugesting to use them as a cheaper route ? you have me confused .can you explain this to me .

oh woops, nvm, I saw rebuild in his post and thought he was gonna get new pistons, then I just reread it and saw basic rebuild. Ok my bad. mustang16125 if you are gonna put new pistons in it then yes the heads listed above all will work, assuming ur getting a stock type piston, if not just replacing rings and bearings, then only the trick flow twisted wedge heads will work. sorry for the confusion

hope this helps
