carb 5.0 swap into 89 2.3 body
Okay, to give a little backround info. I have a 89 2.3 that has a bad rear main seal. Instead of fixing the 2.3, I would much rather swap in a carbed 5.0. Right now I have a freshly rebuilt 302 out of a 88 f150, a street avenger 670 holley, and a holley fpr without the bypass. I have read up on the swap and just finished my friends carb swap so I'm feeling comfortable about doing the swap Im just curious as to the differences in the swap. I have heard that the fuel pump relay isnt under the drivers seat on the 2.3, is this true? Also with my friends mustang we kept the computer so that he could use stock oil pressure and engine temp gauges, can I do the same with the 2.3 computer and wiring harness? Is there anything else I should know about before enbarking on this journey? Thanks in advance, Keith.

I did an 88 conversion. I have a stand alone ignition, Full MSD. The fuel pump relay or whatever it is, is under my drivers seat. I cut out all of my ECM harness and run manual oil pressure, H20 temp gauges. I had to jump out my fuel pump relay with a wire that got hot when the key was on. I used the factory wires in the back to wire up my blue pump. I run new braided hose for a fuel line from the sump all the way to the carburetor. My factory fuel level gauge is still hooked up and I have the correct gear on my speedo cable, but no other gauges work in my dash. All the lights work, including the wipers. I run a vacuum sec. 750cfm Holley carburetor.

You don't need the computer to use the stock gauges, just find a wiring diagram and follow the circuit. You would need the computer to run the fpr, but that could be accomplished by other means. Don't forget to address the differences in fuel pressure - 2.3 efi = 40 psi, carb = 8-15 psi.
