Unhappy Black Water

I have a question. I put in a used engine 89 5.0. It started up ok but the driver side tail pipe started spewing black water. Both sides did the cold morning condensation thing. The pass side stops when it gets warm but the driver side is a different story. If you rev it up it really blows out the crap. My garage floor has a big black spot under the tail pipe. Not the usual clouds of white smoke. I don't recall smelling any burning antifreeeze. Number 8 plug is black, the rest look ok. Tomorrow I'm going to do a compression check. I know. I should have done that when I brought the motor home. I switched to a carb, it has an Edelbrock performer intake. Could that gasket be a problem ? Any thoughts about my black puddle ??

It could be running rich on 1 or more cylinders on 1 bank, so you get more carbon buildup on that side of the exhaust. Is the jetting and metering rods the same on both sides? Does it have a vacuum leak?
