Speed density vs MAF
Why does everyone tell me that I should convert my 86 Convertible GT over to MAF. What benefits does it give me?
I have had problems with the MAF going out on other cars. I see it as a potential issue. Do I get serious power gains? What's the deal?

SD doesn't adjust to changes on it's own like a MAF can, since it extrapolates fuel requirements based on a table based on the VE of the engine. SD basically needs a retune when something with the engine changes. That said it's fine, most of the aftermarket high performance EFI and race EFI systems are SD and/or Alpha-N.
Even Formula 1 cars don't run MAF. Their main purpose is for passing emissions, since it provides a degree of finite control over variables that are impractical to design into a SD software package.

An intake manifold won't merit a MAF conversion (I'm pretty sure) but if you go changing the cam and a bunch of other mods then you will have to convert. I'd say get a used ECU/MAF set-up for now just so you can do your mods.

yea i did this on my last 87 and it was very easy to do! Just go to junk yard and pick up an ecu from a 88-93 5.0 aswell as all tubing for intake if you dont have with MAF! You can buy the harness that goes to ecu from MAF!!!

You can do mod's to S/D Mustang .You just can't go wild with cams.Heads ,intake exhaust will work with S/D.On my Gt i've tried to adjust idling up to 1000 rpm,s and the idling go up and down.It will only idle at one spot smooth.

Again, most aftermarket race systems are SD. The good ones run Alpha-N at low speed for smooth idle and off idle transition.
Stock SD systems are problematic in some areas, but you can replace the ECU with something that has far more flexibility.
