Dispatching rumors
There have been posts about the GT500 and how 'slow' it is. People 'arguing' over its weight and final drive ratio.
M&T just did a really good write up on it. I like M&T better than R&T and slightly more than C&D. They seem to be more american car based than the other two (IMO). Plus they also seem to have slightly better times in testing, I'll contribute that to better driving.
Some of this stuff you might know already some you might not.
Here's what we got.
90deg s/c v8, iron block aluminum heads, DOHC 4v/c
8.4:1 compression
5.4L, (4.6 on steroids...15mm longer stroke) so it is NOT the lightning block i guess????
255/18 up front, 285/18 in the rear
live axle with a 3.31 rear end (same as auto gt)
BIG brakes 14in front 11.8 rear
very very heavy 3944lbs
weight distribution 57f/43r
stats
0-60 4.5
0-100 9.6
1/4mi 12.7@116
.92g
69.7 slalom
handling is awesome for a live axle car
$42,670 as tested
base of $41,950
Tranny is a t6060 6spd, latest version t56
triple synchro first and second gears
first gear is 2.97:1
clutch 215mm Valeo twin disc cerametallic
No where near z06 territory, but then again its 30k cheaper.
The 500 is just about on par with a c6 and for slightly cheaper.
M&T did a side test with it against the charger srt8 and gto. Obviously it won.
The car has a good trap. With a set of stickies on it, she'll go very low 12s if not high 11s. I'm sure a rear end swap with stickies will show 11s easily.
IMO Ford did their homework with the car. I don't think its the best looking Mustang, but it has really good straight line performance. But for a 2ton car it handles exceptionally well. .92 on the skidpad!!! and almost 70mph in the slalom. All this with a live axle!!

i'm with you... alot of people have been bringing it down lately and honestly i just don't get it, it's the fastest production mustang ever made. people are always insisting on comparing it with a vette or a viper for some reason, when in reality it has nothing to do with 2 seater sports cars... it's a freakin' pony/muscle car. i for one love the looks of it, i'd jump on one right now if i had the opportunity... how many 500hp stock production cars can you get for 40k ??
Yeah its still a Damn fast car and for that i would pay the price just to have a rare breed stang thats super fast like my dads 69 mustang boss 429!!! What will be interesting is to pare it up with my dads 67 GT 500 and run em down the road just to see what people say!!!!
You guys keep talking about the $40K like people are going to actually be able to pay that much. After the mark up you are going to be close to $50K or higher. These cars are not going to go for sticker or $1,000 over sticker.
While everyone is entitled to their own view of the GT500, searching around for an article that sides with your views doesn't make the car any better. The GT500 handles well but it does not match the balanced handling the 03 Cobra has. I don't expect it to match the dynamics of a Corvette. I know they are two very different cars. What I do expect is a lot less weight. This car is a pig and I feel Ford didn't do their homework. I do give Ford some credit for making such a heavy car handle well. I'd give them way more credit if the car were much lighter.

People will be paying close to 60k once its all said and done, but after 3-6months it will cool down and you will be able to get close 40-45k, because there will 10,000
as for the car itself, I said it before, ford and shelby should took some pointers from steve saleen, look at the Extreme 550hp 500tq,out of a 4.6l, I know its close to 70k but they kept the weight of the gt for the most part saleen says 3550 lbs or so I think more like 3700 but thats 200-400lbs less than the 5.4 l gt500 and 50 more hp........

i still wouldn't get one though
You all have to remember that Ford set the MSRP at the low 40's mark. It's not their fault how much the dealerships gouge ppl for them. This is a 40K car with 500bhp....pretty remarkable I think. My main issue with Ford on this matter is still why they didn't mine the aluminum block 5.4 for this car. I think that alone could have made the GT500 much deadlier than it may end up being.
That being said, I'd still prefer to invest money into a stock S197 GT rather than a GT500. They can be made much faster for less money. I consider that I'm at 460bhp in a car that weighs 3630 with me in it.....and I have to wonder if I would even have to worry about a GT500 if one came alongside me on the street[8D]
