I agree; the new GT500 will either prove or disprove itself on the street & strip soon enough....

P.S. The new Z06 'vette is commanding about 90G..... the Gt500 seems a bargain by comparison.....

You all have to remember that Ford set the MSRP at the low 40's mark. It's not their fault how much the dealerships gouge ppl for them. This is a 40K car with 500bhp....pretty remarkable I think. My main issue with Ford on this matter is still why they didn't mine the aluminum block 5.4 for this car. I think that alone could have made the GT500 much deadlier than it may end up being.

That being said, I'd still prefer to invest money into a stock S197 GT rather than a GT500. They can be made much faster for less money. I consider that I'm at 460bhp in a car that weighs 3630 with me in it.....and I have to wonder if I would even have to worry about a GT500 if one came alongside me on the street[8D]
Arguably the most popular statement in this thread....

You better worry about a GT500 that comes along next to you on the street....
Can you say PULLEY swap? Hell you could probably count all the stock cobras out there on one hand.

Don't bench race.

nanaki is right though where it came from I do not know.

40-45k for the shelby, no bank will give the 10-20k markup so the person buying the car better have that much to down on it, this puts this car in a different class for price. for now anyways untill there back to 40-45k

45k plus 15 markup plus intreast=70k for this car.I dont think so

Jeeez....what's up with all the flaming on me tonite?[&:] What did I say? I said I'd prefer to invest the money into a stock GT. It's still a free country right? If it's gonna cost me 60K+ to get my hands on a GT500.........you don't think I could get a 28K S197 GT up running faster than a stock GT500 for what the difference in cost would be? If you don't think so, you are on meth.

And secondly.........READ MY FREAKIN LIPS: "....I have to wonder if I would even have to worry about a GT500 if one came alongside me on the street."
Someone wanna tell me where I was bench racing in that one? Jeez Anyone wanna point out where I said I was gonna smoke a GT500 if one rolled up on me?

most people can't buy a brand new car like that in cash. usually when you buy a car, you're going to finance it. no bank is going to give you 42k for a 27k GT.
umm...........huh?
you said you'd rather get a new GT than a GT500 cause they can be made faster for less money. unless you're paying for the car in cash, you don't have that extra money on hand. i can't afford to buy a new cobra in cash for 45k or something. i can't buy a brand new GT for 27k and have that extra 18k left over to make a GT faster faster than a cobra. get it?

I was just speaking in theoretical dollar terms nanaki. If I had 45-60K laying around the house somewhere I'd rather fully deck out a GT than spend it on a car that will weigh 2 tons and only run mid 12's off the lot. But I see your point also, I just wasn't going into that much realism with my comment. Because let's face it........i can't afford a GT500 OR 25K in mods to my GT.[:@]

The C6 is 1/10 of a second slower than a C5ZO6 which in my opinion does not mean diddly ****. And I also know Vettes. The greater disparity is in handling and with a Z51 C6 it's again a drivers race.

There have been posts about the GT500 and how 'slow' it is. People 'arguing' over its weight and final drive ratio.
M&T just did a really good write up on it. I like M&T better than R&T and slightly more than C&D. They seem to be more american car based than the other two (IMO). Plus they also seem to have slightly better times in testing, I'll contribute that to better driving.
Some of this stuff you might know already some you might not.

Here's what we got.
90deg s/c v8, iron block aluminum heads, DOHC 4v/c
8.4:1 compression
5.4L, (4.6 on steroids...15mm longer stroke) so it is NOT the lightning block i guess????
255/18 up front, 285/18 in the rear
live axle with a 3.31 rear end (same as auto gt)
BIG brakes 14in front 11.8 rear
very very heavy 3944lbs
weight distribution 57f/43r

stats
0-60 4.5
0-100 9.6
1/4mi 12.7@116
.92g
69.7 slalom
handling is awesome for a live axle car
$42,670 as tested
base of $41,950

Tranny is a t6060 6spd, latest version t56
triple synchro first and second gears
first gear is 2.97:1
clutch 215mm Valeo twin disc cerametallic

No where near z06 territory, but then again its 30k cheaper.
The 500 is just about on par with a c6 and for slightly cheaper.
M&T did a side test with it against the charger srt8 and gto. Obviously it won.

The car has a good trap. With a set of stickies on it, she'll go very low 12s if not high 11s. I'm sure a rear end swap with stickies will show 11s easily.
IMO Ford did their homework with the car. I don't think its the best looking Mustang, but it has really good straight line performance. But for a 2ton car it handles exceptionally well. .92 on the skidpad!!! and almost 70mph in the slalom. All this with a live axle!!

Before they start worrying about the new z06 they have to take out the old C5 Z06.
Those sorry *** magazine guys were able to squeeze out 0-60 in 4.1secs and 12.4 in the quarter mile out of the C5 z06.
I do not think this car will be faster than the C6 stock either. The C6 is slightly slower than the C5 Z06. But if I know the ford fans like I think I do, this car will be driven off the dealership lot and strait to the modd shop to change the pulley.
I've heard the C6 is slightly faster than the C5 Z06. I also saw a couple of random strip racing videos which confirmed this. ..
Heard? LoL. I know Vettes bro. The C5 z06 is faster than a C6. A C6 with the Z51 package is still slower. Equal drivers and the Z will win every time. Thats also the reason why C5 Zo6 have not loss their value despite the body change. Only the base models have truly depreciated. Just ask anyone with a C6.

Actualy it's a bit slower than 1/10 of a second. Most people look at the GM's estimates--C6 400hp C5 Z06 405hp and think that they are just about even. But the truth lies in the stock dyno comparisons.. The Z06 adverages 15-20 more RWHP than the C6. The suspension is much better IMO. What realy puts the Z06 over the top is the low weight. The Z06's thinner windshield, lighter battery and titanium exhaust support weight savings. Also equiped with a carbon-fiber hood, the beast weighs in at 3074 pounds--with half a tank of gas! The damn thing hits high 11's and very low 12's stock.

This is what makes the Z06 faster than a C6.
