Escort kills itself.
I'm an old man. So this is an old story.
Back in the 80's when I was in high school, Ford just came out with the new Ford Escort. It was big ad campain for it, as the "world car". It had this and that etc, etc. Kinda of hard believing, but the general public was little curious about the new ford, which was replacing the Pinto.
So we was at Sonics hanging out, when a new escort pulled in. We wanted a look at it. We walked over and starting looking at the car. A local GI owned the car and started in on us how fast it was. It was a "group C "race car, was faster then Mustang because it was lighter, german engineered.blagh, blagh.
I didn't know what a "group C" race car was, but it sounded like BS to me. And his car was bone stock. Total BS. I guess equal to the Ricer BS we get now days. I noticed that the car was an automatic. I figured any self respecting "Group C" race car would have a five speed at least.
Anyway, I had a little VW beetle with a header, small cam, big bore pistons and 2 bbl carb. Not fast, but it ran a high 16 which was pretty good for a 4 banger back in the day. back then a 12 second street car was a really BIG deal. The new Camaro's and Mustangs were loaded with emisions equipment and most only ran 15-16 second 1/4 new.
I didn't know how fast the Escort was, but I figured it would be a close race with his car being an automatic. Plus he was just so full of BS, I just had to challenge him. And I figured if some how he wasn't full of sh&t, it would be fun seeing the little car run.
I asked him to race, and he said no. he didn't want to waste his time on the little VW. after some talking and such he agreed. I basically had to prove that my car was modied to get him to race me.
So we headed out to the local deserted road that we used as our own private race track. We lined up and my buddy got out to flag us. This guy in the escort puts his car in neutral and has it floored. The motor was hitting the rev limiter. I was like holy crap, what an idiot. I was horrified, but I couldn't look away. I've heard of doing a neutral drop before, but at redline?
I was so transfixed by this guys stupidity that I didn't even move when my buddy flagged us. I didn't know what was going to happen when the guy dropped it into drive, but I figured it would be worth watching.
Well, you can guess what happened. and it was an ugly sound, hearing that little Automatic grind itself up. It must have even cracked the case on the transaxle, as a little puddle of ATF starting forming under the now motionless Escort.
We get out and the guy is still talking Sh&t! Too much HP! The car is not really made for drag racing, it's a road racing car car. Blagh, blagh. BS.
And the funny part, was the guy was such an a hole, we left him and his "Group C" race car out there in the middle of no where.
