You guys don't want a first or second gen for a DD. I can give you a list if you want of which part is going to fail at what milage.
Had 4 of them in my family at one point, a 94 talon 2.0 N/A, a 92 laser 2.0 N/A, a 94 laser 1.8 N/A, and a 90 Talon AWD/turbo. All of them had the exact same probelms at almost the exact same mileage lol. They might be made fast cheap, but you won't be running around doing redline launchs in the AWD model like a STI, and it better have low miles on it

theyre not bad lil cars tho. if theyre taken care of(like any other car for the most part i believe). but, what kinda problems and what mileage ? let me know, and i might c&p it into word or something. in case i decide to look for one.
those turbocharged eclipses/talons arent anything to mess with
i agree tho a slightly modded 5.0 would beat one by 3 tractor trailor lengths? no.. infact i doubt he was even racing and u just gunned it...

well... lets start with the turbo cars first.
You can count on rebuilding the turbo around 100K miles. The transmission is going to go around 120K or so if it has seen any abuse at all. If it is a AWD model you are looking at major coin even from a junkyard (I think it was close to a grand if not more). FORGET doing any high RPM dumps and having the trans last any amount of time. The engine is gonna be shot around 140k or so, depending on abuse level and how often you change the oil.
On the n/a cars the transmission dies around the same time. Its important to note that after mine went (in the laser) I went thru THREE junkyard transmissions before finding a good one. IF you keep the engine full of oil, and you make sure you change it real often (2500~ miles) it should last for around 140-150 K before you start to get major oil use etc.
General problems that happen on both turbo and n/a:
At about 130K the water pump is going to die (leaking all over the road). The drivers side window will start coming out of the track when you roll it up (ends up with a gap as it slides up the outside of the door). The right/lower side dash will start to peel up.
Also, right around 120-140K the computer is going to die for absolutly no reason. I cannot explain this, but every one of the cars did this (as well as all the other stuff) right around that milage. What it will start doing is missing on 1, then 2, then 3 cyl, as the signal for the coil packs to fire stops getting sent from the computer for some reason.
Thats all I can remeber right of the top of my head, but there are a few things I am forgetting. They arn't bad little cars, but it definatly isn't something you want to buy that has alot if milage on it. Definatly a throw away at 125K or so car. I doubt you will find many with over 150K still on the road without a major rebuild.
EDIT: no chance a stock 1st/2nd gen, even a AWD turbo one, would have anything for a properly driven stock 5.0. None of these cars will realistically break into the 14s stock, and like I said, the STI style redline launches arn't a option on this car (unless you want to only do it about 3 times per tranny change).
