Most of the time yes, There's another member in this forum that mentioned a C6 owner running high 13's at the track and getting beat by a lightly modded Mustang GT (I did'nt call BS cause I know not everyone that gets behind the wheel of a Corvette is God's gift to racing)....In the end it's all about the driver.

First of all there seem to be a lot of younger guys here. I am a GTO owner from the Houston area and would like to share a couple of thoughts with you guys. I love American muscle cars, whether it is a GTO, Mustang, or the Dodge series or SRT cars. It seems like you younger guys don't have any idea how good things are where high performance vehicles are concerned. I am sure most of you have seen Smokey and the Bandit. Yea, Burts car seemed to kick ***, however that car ran 16's stock. It wasn't until around 1985 until the supposed muscle cars could break into the 14's. It was the 1985 Mustang that really started this performance era. After that the Grand National appeared and 13's were possible. I was a proud owner of a 1987 Mustang 5.0 automatic and it ran mid 14's all day long, after that I bought a 1989 5.0 with a 6 speed and ran low 14's. Due to being a family guy we bought the typical old folks 4 door cars for the next 15 years, however all were American cars.

The point I am trying to make is that no matter what you drive, as long it is a GM, FoMoCo, or Mopar, you are a winner. All of the muscle cars from these companies are capable of mid-low 13's.

My decision to buy a GTO was really pretty simple. I did not want, nor could really afford the Charger/300 SRT's. I could have gotten into a base Mustang GT for about $8,000 less than my GTO. My decision was based upon a lady named Rita. I work for an electric utility company in the Houston area and due to hurricane Rita I brought home a couple of major checks. Of course the 16 hour days wore my old *** out. . So with this extra money my decision was between a loaded Mustang GT or a GTO. I had read the magazines and knew that according to them the GTO was a little faster, but was heavier. The 400 hp for the GTO versus the 300 hp (advertized) played a small part. I really fell in love with an impulse blue metallic (IBM) automatic that I found. The interior was also blue with GTO stitched on the seats. During this time GM also had employee pricing which closed the gap from the original (base GT) $8,000 to about $1,000-$2,000 for the premium GT. Part of my decision to buy the GTO was the interior and performance, but the biggest part was the fact that only about 16,000 would be sold in the USA versus many, many Mustang GT's.

Now, about who would kill who. My best time is a 12.997@106.87. Most of my times are in the 13.000 to 13.150 range. I rarely race on the street as I have too much to lose if I get caught, but if you are faster than a 13.000, you are faster than I am , if not, you are slower than I am. It is not rocket science. I imagine a lot of us would be close in the low 13.10 area.

I congratulate you guys and gals on the purchase of your cars. They are really nice rides and you should be proud of them. As to my GTO, I am not better or worse, I just made a different decision based upon my personal preferences.
Best post I have seen in here in a loooooong time.

Not disagreeing with you at all. But I'd bet that you actually learned how to drive your car also. No matter what anyone tells you.......a monkey can't beat ANYONE behind the wheel of a fast car. Hell, I see ppl everyday driving Accords and Taurus' and Sunfire's and such that can't even drive those turds properly. Can you image such ppl behind the wheel of a 400+hp performance car?[:@]

Tell that cobra driver he needs to learn how to drive! He should be beating you.

Why's that. Just like most cases we discuss here - the Cobra driver may be substandard or the GTO owner may have been bang on with his launch, ect . . . When I was bolt-on with drags running 13 flat I outran a few Cobra 99/01 and 03/04. The 04 Vert ran a 13.2. He had an intake and catback but that was it. Of course, back then I did get my *** handed to me by a pullied, bolt-on, tuned 03 Cobra. It's a different story now though. I've only been beat by a KB+50 shot (11.1) once and a Steig 3 ported eaton with upper/lower, bolt-ons, fats/skinnies, ect once (11.3). The others I have beaten with no problem. I have a few more things up my sleeve though
