and you need to have mechanical knowledge...i wouldnt recommend someone who hasnt been under the hood of a car going with the "ill pay attention to where everything comes from" method.
working on the car takes some experience, at least alittle knowledge of what does what, and some common sense.

If you have the basic know-how then you know that you need to have patience because if you rush it or do not pay attention you are going to fugged up.
There are plenty of people here on these forums that can help you out but I do reccomend you go to the 5.0 section.
Good luck.

RE: OMG! I just lost to a Maxima!!!
find a credible shop near you...
Start by getting some Headers in there, BBK shorties ceramic coated should do you just fine
Then do Gears, 4.10s if your are driving around the streets will actually raise your MPG as long as your gentle on them they get you into higher gear faster so less time is spent in the lower gears. on the highway its about a 2-3mpg loss..
Then get a Upper and Lower intake, with a CAI or RAI. and TB
Then do some UDPs
i know some kid with all of that in a 93lx vert... and he MOVES and dynoed 224 to the wheels on an auto tranny he now has a t-5, and is working his way into some Heads and Cam to match his Cobra upper and lower intake. also he has the 3.27 gears... as i said HE MOVES

You don't have any mods really thats the problem. Plus the older Gt's wern't that quick to begin with. So it sucks you lost to this thing, get some mods then race him again.

if you just wanna beat your friend for now. do the following
Advance your timing - this is free and noticeable
remove your air silencer - this is free
get a set of underdrive pulleys - this is not free but will only be about $100 (cash in your spare change)
remove any crap you may have in your trunk (spare tire) - this is free
i did everything in that order when i first got my 95gt about 5 years ago. totally changed my perspective on my 'slow' mustang.
if you only lost by a car or two, i guarantee you will smoke him. you will also see how easy it is to get noticeable HP from a 5.0. then start doing the good stuff like was already mentioned: gears, intakes, etc..
