How will that help with the price gouging? Just curious. Aren't they going to only make the car for two years and only for a limited time? I don't see what they could to to prevent price gouging other than selling them factory direct and paying the dealership a commission (like we do when we sell aircraft).
And thanks for explaining about the auto transmission. Makes sense.

for the first year, chrysler attempted to address the price gouging by putting out these few-option "special edition 6400". the only real options that you can pick from for these first 6400 is orange, black or silver..with or without sunroof, with or without navigation.
they "intend" to offer a V6 and 5.7L model, as well as a manual transmission for the 5.7 and 6.1. the reason that they went with the auto trans for this year, was because theyre hoping to minimize "bugs", so theyre using a transmission that has been behind this engine for a few years now, and has stood up to the abuse. the 6-speed trans is relatively untested, so they took the easy way out.

with this initial batch of few-option cars, chrysler can pump them out (i understand that one of the cars displayed was number 6400, which would imply that they are all made, but if there were 6400 challengers sitting somewhere, youd think that they would be discussed). this keeps the cost low, and lets be honest, the american car companies need to find SOME way to make some quick, easy money.
look at the launch of the GT500. people were paying a fortune for the right to buy one. collectors want a first edition model, and this decent sized batch of first editions will take care of the hardcore collectors, who are only going to put them away, and pay substantially higher than msrp for the cars. with those guys out of the way, there will be less cars purchased for the 2009 model year just to pack away, so that people like me can go get one...preferably in sublime or plum crazy.
again, this is just my take on things...and for what its worth, my opinions on the challenger have been published...[8D]
Makes perfect sense, ROTM. I hope to get my hands on one as well. But I wouldn't pay ADM for a GT500 and I certainly won't for a Challenger. I am praying the stealerships don't try to a$$ rape us poor consumers.
I have a few related dealership connections...not to the point where we will get one of the first 6400, but we dont plan on paying any markup at the dealership...but i want a manual transmission, and maybe a bigger engine...

im not one of those "first on the block to have something" people..i dont want the first challenger, i just want A challenger...with a manual transmission, and no stupid *** 20 inch wheels. if i want 20inch wheels, ill buy a 64 impala.

but if you think about it, once you get to a certain age of the cars, theyre all worth something...the early 80s turbododges are fetching a fair dollar...hell, i sold one that didnt run for over a grand...
my demon 340 was a budget car, and it books for something like 20,000 now...what is that, like 5 times what it sold for, new?
