Is there only one engine option for the E55 AMG? When did the car first go into production and has it always had the same engine? I can't find anything definitive.

If I owned a big luxury sedan and I could keep it within a few cars of a blown S197, I'd be the one bragging!

There is only one engine choice for each gen E55. The first gen was made from '98-02 and had a 349 hp 5.5 V8. The second gen was '03-06 and had a 469hp supercharged 5.5 V8.

The E55 has now been replaced by the E63...

Judging from his posts, it was a newer supercharged model. They're easily distinguished from one another because they're completely different body styles.....

Non supercharged model (W210)

Supercharged model (W211)

I am not a huge Benz enthusiast, and if I ran into one on the street I wouldn't be able to tell them apart. Thanks for putting up the pics.[sm=smiley20.gif]

ya even with the pics there i can barely tell the diff.

the only reason i knew the one i raced was supercharged is beause of the whining it was making, and the fact it was pullin away from me lol

It was the new E55 I raced. However, after I pulled past him the first time, all I heard was a "faint" exhaust.

I know they are "cough" underrated, however, they are beast in lower RPM's, am I right? I managed to start behind one, floor it after he did, and pass him, up to the top of 2nd, where my tires were spinning like hell, and he barely kept even with me until we shut down.

Oddly enough, after the crazy amount of times this guy floored it, and pulled away, I could not hear a whine at all....I just read an article, which is iffy iffy, http://www.edmunds.com/apps/vdpconta...9/pageNumber=1
and it mentions the car running 13's at around 113. Now, some of you claim they can run 11's bone stock, but, how does a GT500, with more power, and similar torque, and a tad less weight, with live axle, better tires, not run 11's and trap 120? Just curious....Thanks guys!
