Can anyone explain what straight cut gears means? I don't really know about the different types of manual transmissions.

Helical

vs

Straight cut

Straight cut gears are usually noisier(they whine pretty loud, sounds sweet to me) but require less power to turn them

Helical gears are what are normally in cars because they are quieter. Most race cars have straight cut gears. I think Helical are more reliable too. Less chance for tooth to tooth contact, which can cause damage.

Basically no gear can be engaged UNTIL the synchro matches the speed of the gear. The difference in alot of small transmission cars like fwd like that Integra is the internals like the speed gears, input shaft and clutch disc are so light they CAN match the speed of the gear easily. Our Mustang transmissions are more "truck" like in comparison and it's harder to match those speeds. For the same reason it would be harder to engage 1st from a high speed.

Yeah, I don't think it works with the T-56. I imagine we're running the same transmission.

I'm fairly sure, although I preload it whenever I'm driving. I'll tell you what, when I first heard what preloading was, I laughed my *** off and said "damn, I've been doing that in my nissan since I was 15"

If you don't know what it is, anyone really, it's just putting pressure on the shifter in the way that you intend to shift before you actually shift.

It's never failed me

I'm thinking, by straight cut gears, you're talking about a proshifted tranny? Not rearend gears. At least for the original topic. Here's a video of me in my old car before the TH400. You had to rev match the car to downshift it and couldn't shift to 1st unless you were stopped. It has no syncros. I still drove it around town on a near daily basis. I loved that car.

This is what most of your gear jammer cars run, with an inline shifter.
