Something must be wrong
Something must be wrong. So here's the story. I see a 2000 GT mustang with Hid's and a blacked out panel. I wasnt initially gonna race him but as I went for my exit he jumped it. I followed suit and we lined up. Both our cars looked and roared proudly. He takes the hit and I follow. I was in 3rd doing 75 or so when we lunged forward. I stopped his pull and got about a 1/4 car ahead of him till 120. For some reason when I threw it into 5th, my car fell flat. He took a 1/4 car lead at this point. I looked at my speedo and it screamed out 130. I figured it wasnt smart to go any further n I shut it down. We pulled over the next exit n talked a bit. Apparently all he had was a bbk intake and an x pipe. Now my question is would have I over taken him after he shifted into 5th? What do 3.27's go to in 4th? My guess is that since I went into 5th before him that my car was flat and I would've taken him had we gone to higher speeds. I have 3.73's o/r pipe, bassani cat back. I know I haven't changed my air filter in a while and I could use an oil change but did that affect the outcome? I'm kinda irritated honestly. What do you guys think?
Aren't they basically the same car?
Probably drove a bit better then you, or his car was built on a monday, lol.
He was probably able to hold higher rpm's longer then you due to the 3.27's, so when you shifted into 5th, that torque-less 4.6l was done until the RPM's would get back up.
next time hold 4th as long as possible.

Good run man and don't be upset with your car bc I was out running other 2 v's in my ex's 01gt with a drop in filer x-pipe n dumps when they had gears tuner intake and plenum.
As far as the gears the 3.73's run out right at 120 in 4th and the 3.27's do 130 in 4th hince why he pulled back but I'll be the first to tell you with stock gears a near stock 2v bearly pulls in 5th.... 130-140 seems like the longest ride ever!!! Lol

Damn, that leads me to believe I shut it down too early. I'm sure I would've slowly and I mean slowly pulled him had we gone to 140 lol. Oh well, those are ridiculous speeds at that point. I'm about to do a oil change and buy a new air filter lol. Surprisingly, I knew the guy, small world. I wonder what it would like to be from a dig. He has 315's Falken's (Not sure what exactly) compared to my old 285 pirelli all seasons. Hmmm.
As far as same car, I'm supposedly have 10-15 more HP from the factory and a flatter torque curve. And then my suspension upgrades compared to a stock 2000 GT are night and day.

Not sure about all of your mods but if memory serves a stock 2v struggles to reach 150mph... (my friends stock 03 GT topped just over the 140 mark)... This is a case where gearing allows you quicker acceleration but can hinder top end performance.
Reminds me of the wife losing to a Jetta in her old LT1 Z28... smoked him until she hit her 120mph limiter (stupid 2.73 geared A4) and 20 minutes later he sailed on past for the win. LOL

Seems like I remember the 4.10s in my Mach running out to 140ish in 4th. Been awhile, so maybe I'm way off, but I would think with 3.27s you could run at least 135 mph in 4th. Never run in 5th though. Like Jt said, run out 4th then quit.
