curious
I was wondering how those import cars can be so fast
how is it possible those 4 & 6 bangers can hold so many horsepower over 500 to the wheel
im talking about the evo, 3000 gt, skyline, supra, wrx
i watched video clips were imports smoked domestics
how this possible, i thought american musscle is faster

DURH, turbo+Vtek ownz the Skr33tz.
Seriously, turbo is what does it. As to how a damn supra can get up to 1100 hp and more on stock internals is beyond me. Can anyone explain??????????????????????

A Dodge Neon is easy to modify with boost up to about 320 FWHP which is a lot in that weight of car (Chrysler High_performance division will sell you the parts), and you can get another 100 in the aftermarket. Makes it a mid to low 11s car.
Most 4-bangers can get into the 12s or high 11s but it is really rare to see a streetable one in the 10s.
Boost is the answer, in theory, each 15# of boost doubles HP.
Also keep in mind "stock" internals for some cars are forged and the 4 cylinder block is strong.
The limitation on "stock" internals for mustang is because Ford chose to use cheaper parts. The "stock" 03 Cobra has forged internals and should be okay to make near 1000 HP.

the problem with getting near 1000 Hp in the Ford, or any GM engine with stock or aftermarket forged internals, will not be the bottom end. With oil cooling and extra oil flow they can take it. Its usually the head sealing - gaskets -- that are headaches. I've heard of 6-liter GM LS2 engines, even when O-ringed, that blow when running 16+ lbs or more boost (about what it takes to get 1000-1100 RWHP), the stock heads on the LS cars have two thin of a deck thickness to retain the O-rings well. It would proabably be something similar on the Fords given everyone tries to cut alumnimum thickness there for all the right reasons.

Who says you do it with stock internals? You don't get 1000 HP in ANYTHING with stock parts. My son and I see that as the "Rubicon test" of street/strip racers: cars fall into two types those with a stock short block, and those that crossed the line and spent the money with a built short block. for Camros and vettes (what we know a bit more than 'stangs and Mopars) that generally has to be corssed for a variety of reasons at 425 RWHP and 11.7 seconds, although my vette got 475 RWHP and 11.2 seconds with a SC'd stock block and ran reliably for two years before we built the current engine.
The owner built that Supra built it up with the very best internal parts , often exotic parts, forged, titanium -- he wouldn't say and i can only guess, plus lots of custom machining (you don't think a 1100 HP crank will fit in a stock block, do you?): the supra that ran 9.4 versus my 9.8 probably spent $40K on the engine and it had a solid rear axle (modified Ford 9 inch I think). Anyone who does that is damn serious and had spent serious money on the car. that's all it takes.
Most of the 10 second Civics and all you see have mega-bucks spent on them: get that Car and Driver "fourgasm" issue that tests the tuner 4-cyclinder cars and look: most in there would only run 12s and typically the mods they had cost more than the car itself.
