Raced a Viper

Oh, now that's now fair! I'm probably what you consider old (57), and I own a vette, and I don't think I'm a sissy, and I don't waste HP, although I like to have plnty to burn if I need it.
I normally don't post things like this, but since you brought it up, my wife and I go out cruising on weekends when it is nice. We were out yteresday afternoon (it was a perfect, absolutely perfect sunny day in central NC) and I just killed a 40-something in a new-model red Viper coupe. He pulled up at a light next to me, we looked and I nodded, and we drove out to US1 south. Got side by side at about 40 and nailed it. I put more than five lengths on him before the top of 3rd gear, and was really pulling away when I shut down. He didn't try for a second go at it. Realize i had two on board to his one, too, although my wife is sort of small (115 lbs).
One thing to realize is to go for it with a first-gen Viper the original models are only 415 HP and some wieghed 3500 lbs. They are pretty easy to take compared to the newer 510 HP ones (which weigh about 125 lbsl less, too). I'd expect a stock 2003 Cobra can take one of the early ones, or at least stay even. the newer ones are a lot faster, though.

Vipers tend to be owned by the same people that own most Vettes: sissy old men who just like to waste horsepower.

Silverbullet: All the Vette owners that I actually personally know (except my boss) have also modified their Vettes for speed, two with nitrous. That's because they are younger guys in my F-body club, either former or current F-body owners. They are probably in the minority.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 94 Viper has over 410hp & 460TQ?
I would figure that the extra torque & about 150-180lbs weight difference would give the Viper a good shot at showing me how horrible they sound while I'm looking at his tail lights?

Yeah, the first years were 410-415 HP, and they handled poorly, too, very twitchy rear end made them tend to spin out rather than dig in coming out of a corner. They are pretty fast (12.5 quarter) but my point is that they are not so fast that a well modified Mustang can't take them. My 02 ZO6 (405 Hp version) could put about three lengths on one back when all it had on it was a set of LT headers and CAI. I would expect an 03 Cobra with good aftermarket LT headers and smaller pulley could beat one. Of course, some of them have mods, too, although far fewer than I would expect: must be a different type of person who buys them than vettes or mustangs because most I see are very stock even after ten years of ownership.
The later 450 HP ones, and the current 500 and 510 HP ones (funny how that extra 10 Hp just appeared overnight when GM brought out the 505 HP vette) are much much faster (11.3 quarter). Then there is the club racer version, which hasn't really got much more power (but a more responsive tune) but weighs a bit less and is set up for more roadholding. Its still a bit faster in the 1/4, and a few of those are licensed and on the street - there's one around here now but I've never raced him and wouldn't dare take on something like that on the street: have to go much too fast to prove anything one way or the other.
