you dont need camber plates to put sprigns in. People just like to put thme in sometimes along with the springs. You could say you should have them.. but you really dont NEED them. Just buy aftermarket springs and lower it a bit, dont bother with the GT springs, the results wont be as nice as you'd expcet them to be for all the work you'll put in installing them.
With springs all you need.. is simply springs. No shocks, no plates, none of that. you can get them later on, but no damage will be done to your car, and its not doing a crappy job, by not installing them.

Ok, so if I'm going to buy springs I should just buy actual lowering springs, but if a friend would give me some GT springs for the front that he has laying around, that would work also?

it might lower it, but not in the way your looking for. The only reason the GT springs would "lower" your car is because they're not made to handle the front end/engine weight of the cobra, so in essence it would lower your car mayble a little, but not the proper way.
mustang GT's are not any lower than a cobra really, at least they're not mean to be.
