Coolant Problem
i just got my cobra about a week agoand the low coolant level light came on, so i let it cool down and when i opened it there are little black specs around the top of the coolant and i filled the coolant up and now it seems to start dropping again. i cant find any leaks under the car so i think it might be in the engine. could it be a bad head gasket? i have a three month warranty on it from a dealership. just wondering what your guys opinions are cause i dont want to drive 45 miles one way to the dealership. thanks

RE: Coolant Problem
The easiest (but not necessarily most definitive) way to find out if you have coolant in your oil is to pull the dipstick and see if you have a "rainbowy" (I like that word) film on it. I've never heard of black specs, possibly rust in the radiator. My GT does the same thing. I've looked everywhere and found no sign of coolant leaking anywhere and not found any in the oil, but I do go through coolant slowly but steadily. After a couple of months the coolant will drop enough to make the light flicker on and off sometimes. I've never found a problem so I just top it off every so often and don't worry too much about it.

i just checked the dipstick and there is no rainbow color. do you have any idea where the coolant is going though? i just think its kinda odd that it isn't leaking but the level slowly goes down.

By the way, I just re-read what I said and I think I was half asleep, but I meant to say to check for a head gasket leak to look for the rainbow in the coolant. Also, you can stick your finger in and see if it feels oily. Sorry, brain fart. [&:]
