Default Wheel bearing trouble...

About a month ago I had a weird noise coming from the car. Went to a local shop, put it on the lift and the driver's side rear tire basically caved out. The wheel bearing was totally gone. I replaced it witb a brand new Timken installed by a quality shop. Two weeks later...heard a similar noise as the first time I heard it, took it back to the shop, put it on the lift and there's about two inches of travel on the wheel! Tried tightening the axle nut in case it walked off, no change.

They're going to replace it again for me on Monday, at no cost.

Could it have been a bad install? Not packed correctly? The machine shop that took care of it said the axle was fine. Is this something that could be caused by high torque?

Any ideas?

That's what I was going to tell ya....I had this happen to me recently. I have an IRS with DSS level 5 half shafts in my Mach 1 and the DSS hub cracked, destroyed the wheel bearing, which destroyed the knuckle. Had to order a whole new knuckle assembly from Tousley Ford (SVTP sponser - very good prices). DSS defective part ended up costing me almost $1,000 in repairs...hope yours is cheaper!

Sort of high pitched, like a squeal. It's a sucky thing to have happen in the middle of the summer. Waiting on a new spindle/knuckle from Ford's Main Depot in Detroit where they store the niche line replacement parts.

Fortunately (if your avatar info is right) you have a solid axle. Cheaper and easier to fix. The IRS has more components in it that are harder to come by and cost more.

If it's a wheel bearing, it will usually go away when you swerve one way or the other when driving as you shift the weight off of the bad bearing.

ya it is SRA im wondering if this is something that i need to deal with now rather then later it did exactly what you said and squeal when i would turn but now doesnt do it at all since the new rims the ride is still smooth and the axles seem fine with no wobble even went autoXing with no problems i just dont want to have my axle wobble off as im driving

Tousley Ford hooked me up big time. Part is on its way via FedEx, to be delivered tomorrow at my shop....and they beat my local SVT dealer's price by 45%.

After thinking about it some more I don't know if yours would wobble all that much since it is a solid axle. BUT, I'm thinking it might be possible that if your bearing is bad it could get bad enough to the point that it could damage both your axle and your axle tube. Not sure, but that seems like it would be possible to me? But, if it doesn't make any noise when you have the car in the air and rotate the wheels...then it's probably fine.
