i was just wondering if like most of the people that always suggest 4.10sfor autos besides cobra232 and a few others that seem to drive a manual (or maybe an auto - idk).. can someone w/an autolike myself, or has driven one with 4.10sgive us some advice about 4.10s vs 3.73s - i'm not trying to be harsh, just would like some more advice myself. thanks.
I have no idea what the hell you are saying in that first sentence. I've never had 3.73s, but I had 4.10s with my auto before I swapped transmissions. Gas mileage wasn't that bad with 4.10s. Of course if you floor it everywhere you're going to get **** for mileage, but that's no different than stock gears. Highway I was getting ~24-25 mpg. Not great, but not terrible. If you have a tune/shift kit with some serious firmness, I'd say you could lose control on the 1-2 shift. I never adjusted my shift firmness from what Justin gave me on my xcal, but I could tell it was close to kicking the *** end out. You deserve to be in the ditch if you're flooring it on wet roads with an insane shift firmness.

Most people suggest 4.10s for an auto and 3.73 for manual because the auto has a lower 1st gear than a manual transmission.

Don't get your hopes up about 4.10s, though. Yeah, 1st gear revs kinda fast, but it still leaves you with the feeling of blue ***** once it gets to 2nd gear.

Basically what I was saying is all the manual ppl are saying "3.73-manual, 4.10-auto."Like I've really never heard any definitefeedback from us auto guys until your comment. But you summed it up perfectly man - and yeah the last sentence was good. Kudos man.

One last thing is I heard about the fastest you can go unlimited with 4.10s unlimited is around 130 - is that true... you sure as hell don't need to be going that fast anyway, but just curious???

I could be wrong, but I think I remember our cars being limited by drag at 136mph, and that's with stock gears. I would assume with 4.10s, you'd actually be able to come closer to redlining 4th gear, so I would think it would be about the same.

I've got 3.73 with an auto. I like em but then again I don't. I do more highway driving than city, and when I run around 80 MPH like I normally do I am running right around 3000RPM in over drive. Thats not too terribly bad, but why work the motor that hard if not needed. It has much better acceleration than stock, but I'm not looking for a 1/4 mile car, something more all purpose. I recently bought a GT rear axle with 3.55 and am looking forward to putting it in. Maybe this weekend with procharger

Does it put a lot more stress on the engine? If so, should I do some upgrades to the engine first or just go with gears right now?

Oh sorry Mooses, I am running 2850 rpms at 80 MPH, like I said around 3000rpms at 80. No engine modificatons really need to be doneto support the gears, but every little bit will help.

Hello, 3.55's or 3.73's on any mustang older than 1999?
