Pinging, 2000 V-6 auto
Even on premium gas, pings with any part-throttle running, slight acceleration. Nailing it or manually downshifting seems to make it go away, but that's not what you'd call economical.
Haven't had one of these before, just got it this summer. Pinging started maybe a couple of months ago.
I wanted to check timing, but with distributorless ignition, that's not a factor, is it? What else do I check?

Well it still has a destributor like shaft that controlls the injectors timing.
I would try the basics first before messing with that, but if you need to your manual will explain in detail how to reset that.
Run some seafoam through the gas tank, through a vacuum port that feeds boths sides of the engine and run some in the oil. 1 can will do you well for the whole car.
This is a good time to replace your spark plugs and while doing that check all of your plug wires and make sure they are damaged.
You could also have a weak fuel pump causing a lean codition or your charging system isnt up to part again causing a loss of power to the fuel pump causing a lean condition.
Best of luck getting it figured out, take some time to search around the threads.

actually i heard from cobra232
that on 2000 v6's they have a bad pcv valve side valve cover.....idk why but he said they sell a replacement kit for it....
i have a 2000 and i hear some noise as well...
i'm gonna do the valve cover exchange and plugs and seafoam hopefully that'll make it go away...
but THE HOLIDAYS AND BIRTHDAYS ARE GONNA CLEAN ME OUT!
so it'll have to wait a little longer.

You don't have to replace the valve cover. Just put a filter in the hose to catch any oil. If the engine gets too much oil sucked into it carbon deposits form creating hot spots then you get detonation, 'aka' pinging. You can get a cheap oil separator from Harbor Freight or Kragens for about $10.00 that will catch any oil.

yeah 99's are the same way.. i ran seafoam, replaced plugs with ones that were a step colder, and did the filter on the line thing... just make sure u get a glass one and not a plastic one
