Default shifting problems

I drive a 00' v6 mustang, 5 speed manual transmission. I'm having this problem shifting on 2nd and 4th gear. The deal with the 2nd gear is when I shift to 2nd gear, I can feel something that is blocking the shifter, like it doesn't want to go to 2nd gear and it feels that something is pushing it back. On the 4th gear, there is this little grind. The grinding on the 4th gear doesn't happen too much. All this happens when I go slow. But when I start going fast, around 4000rpm or more, all the gears work perfect (well, almost perfect). I went to different forums and people tend to have the same problem, but instead of having shifting problems on low rpm, they are having problems on high rpm. Weird huh? The faster I go, the less I have to worry about grinding gears, but I can't drive fast all the time. What do you guys think is the problem with my car? I've already flushed and refilled the transmission fluid but it didn't do any good. I'm thinking of getting a short throw shifter, maybe that would fix the problem, but I don't want to spend some money on something that wouldn't help. I'm not a mechanic so I have to ask the mustang gurus here before I spend my money on something.

synchronizers might be off. I don't think a short throw shifter is the answer to your problem. You might have to take it to a shop and have them take a look for you. But i'd wait to see what some of the other guys have to say...

+1, it's not the shifter, it's going to deal with the transmission, or clutch assembly.

Possible causes:
Clutch not releasing properly
Sticking or jamming gears
Faulty synchronizer assembly

could this be the same problem Im having with my car. 5 speed with short throw, the problem I have is that I have a hard time shifting into 1st. No problem with anyother gear besides reverse (but i havent drove a Mustang yet that liked going into reverse) and it doesnt always happen but more time that not I have to like force into 1st.

Thanks,
Matt

Ok... I did some more research, the synchronizers might be the problem. can anybody here give me a quick estimate how much it is gonna cost?

your local shop should be able to give you a rough estimate. our opinions are gonna vary, as we are all from different parts of the country. as with all tranny work, the parts arent all that bad, but it is the labor thatll getcha. call around, get a few opinions. good luck.

If anything, I'd just bring the car into a well known shop, such as Midas, or Cottman, because they're a corporate based company, and will have better customer service than your run of the mill shop. You my pay more, but if they screw up, they're going to have to fix it, unlike a small shop that just may tell you to p*ss off and never come back.

I had the same exact problem. I thought it was the syncros at first but after screwing with the ****y stock quadrant it felt different everytime. It was srewing up the clutch soI bought the quadrant, adjuster and cable. Now its good.

It only grinds faintlywhen I am going to slow like you said but it is harder to shift at higher rpms then lower.
