Won't start
Hello all,
I have a 2001 Mustang with a V6. My son parked it in the driveway a couple weeks ago and left it and it hasn't ran since. I checked for spark and there is spark. I sprayed starting fluid in it and nothing. The thief light blinks until you turn the key, then it just cranks and nothing happens, doesn't even try to fire. I am kind of stumped here. I have never driven this car before so I don't know how it is supposed to act.
Thanks for your help,
Bill

Heya and welcome to the forums.
Well being that you got no fire from the starting fluid that means that you dont have spark.
The Theif light is suppose to blink that like until you turn the key.
The coil packs are notorious for going out on 01-04 Mustangs but I havnt heard of one just 100% dieing like this.
Take the coil pack off and look it over for cracks.
Make sure to mark where each plug goes so that you dont get the firing order mixed up.
Thats the first place for you to look.
If you have to buy a new coil pack I highly suggest another stock unit.
I have a Borg Warner on my 2001 after the Ford coil pack died.
If you must, this is the next best option for 1 reason only - It has a lifetime warranty.
I chose it because I would have to wait a week to get a Ford Motorcraft unit.
I had to drive from Springfield Mo. to Oklahoma City to pick up a 00' sixxer that day and couldnt wait for the Motorcraft unit.

I will look at the coil pack if the rain gives me a break today. I checked one of the plug wires already with a screwdriver stuffed in it and it had spark, but maybe it is weak or all the cyl. don't have spark.
I thought I heard the fuel pump kick on, but I have not smelled any gas, just the starting fluid so I will check the fuel pump too. Any suggestions on how to do this? I don't have a book on this car, but looks like I might end up buying one.
Thanks!!!!!!

To check the fuel pump, have your son lay on the ground behind the car and when you turn the key to the ON position, he should he the fuel pump spinning. If he doesnt, its not working.
Does the theft light blink while your cranking the car over?

the screw driver trick only tells you that there is spark. It doesn't say if there is enough. Get an HEI ignition tester and use it instead. If it gets spark, then there is enough spark. If you are getting steady spark on each spark plug wire, then your coil is fine. Motorcraft coils run about $150 at the dealer, but only $85 at rockauto.com.
If you do have spark on all the plugs, check the fuel pressure. Most auto parts stores rent/loan out fuel pressure gauges that you can use pretty cheaply. There are a ton of video's on youtube about doing a fuel pressure test. Its a universal procedure, so don't worry if the video is not a mustang. I don't know what the correct PSI should be though for your ride. Someone else on here may know.
Good luck...
