Default 98 v6 mustang Power increase.

I just bought a 98 v6 mustang with 110k for $1900 as a daily driver, i'll post pics when I have more time. It has a 5 speed and I was wondering what would be the easiest way to pull another 20 hp out of the engine if possible while still remaining Smog legal. I am in CA so I am pretty screwed when it comes to maximizing its potential and have pre smog vehicles in my possession so making it roast the rear tires isn't essential to maintaining a healthy mental state.

Can't really do too much without getting into $$ or flirting with passing smog.
I'd do a cat back dual exhaust, drop in K&N filter and a steeper gear in the rear end and call it a day.

There isn't an easy way to do so without a lot of money. The 94-98 models do not respond very well to mods. Like full basic bolt ons (which can be over a $1000 investment in its own right) may only yield 10-15 rwhp. Maybe 20 since you have a manual, but that's getting iffy. The motor suffers a severe bottle neck flaw design in the intake and heads completely limiting it's abilities in stock form.

Eh it floats the rear end in first and scratches second just fine so I am giving it to my wife, she doesn't know what fast is so she thinks its royally bad@$$.. I am however wondering if the ring and pinion are stock someone had the thing apart according to the hi temp silicon which I'm sure didn't come from the factory....

Also how stiff should the clutch be on these mustangs? This things clutch is pretty stiff even/ about the same compared to the performance clutch I have on my 72 f100.

Mustang clutches are very stiff up till 07 when they started using hydrollic clutches.

Yah, I didn't know they used cables until I crawled under it to check everything out, the previous owner said the pumpkin is stock he just used Hi temp to fix a leak on the back axle. Car has since buying it thrown a CEL but its seems to be running pretty good despite it so i'll have to look into getting the code pulled being as I don't have a reader.
