Is my THERMOSTAT wearing out?? TEMP GAUGE FLUCTUATES
#13
Thermostats are not all created equally, some start to open slowly and close slowly this keeps a more steady temp reading on the gauge . Some thermostats open abruptly when a certain temp is reached . this causes the needle on the gauge to creep up slowly to the normal operating temp of the engine then suddenly open and allow a flood of cooler water from the radiator into the engine causing the gauge to drop. It all depends on the brand of thermostat and whether a cheap one was used.
I always get the more expencive thermostats that if and when they fail they will fail in the open postion. I use to buy cheap 5 dollar stats and after replacing one 3 times with in a month I decided its best to pay the extra and get a good one.

Not sure where to start with my Temp Gage...
Hate to jump in, but I have a 96 Mustang GT and my temp gage sits far above H whether its running or not and never moves. I have replaced the coolant sensor, tested the electrical and removed the cluster to see if that was an issue. I manually moved the temp gage needle to L and reinstalled the cluster. As soon as I started the car, the needle went straight to H. My car is not overheating, but I would still like to know my gage is working. What is the best solution? New Cluster? Thanks for any advice that can be offered...

TO THE OP;
I'm still pretty sure your okay. Those stock gauges are junk. Anywhere from the thin line before the N to the thin line after the L is the normal operating temp. Most factory vehicle gauges in anything are just for show.
Wilkes;
It sounds like you have a wire grounded out somewhere.
