Spongy breaks after ball joint replacment
Hello, I have a 1998 mustang with a 3.6 L w/ an automatic behind it. I recently had to replace the ball joints do to a squeaking noise when ever I drove the car. Once I replaced the ball joints, decompressed the calipers ( I did NOT take the brake lines loose) and put everything back together I pumped the brakes to get them back to normal I drove it around the block. I noticed at this time my brakes are real spongy and don't stop me unless the pedal is on the floor. I did not mess with the brake fluid at all. I only decompressed the calipers with a big C-clamp and put them back on. I've done brakes this way for many years. My question is has anyone else ran across a problem like this or does anyone know what it could be?

Did you leave the calipers hanging by the brake hoses? That would weaken the walls of the brake hoses and could lead to spongy brakes. Instead of the lines transmitting the hydraulic pressure to the caliper piston, they bulge and rebound like a rubberband, thus the spongy feeling.
