Default Custom Tune 89/93 Octane question.

Ok I understand the timing curve stuff and the need for higher octane gas with some tunes but.....

...what if your just driving the thing normally?

IOW in little old lady mode plus a little?

Will you risk damage using 87 because the thing will ping even if not racing it?
Or is there some forgiveness factor built in?

Also do they disable the knock sensor, or decrease the sensetivity or neither?

I know with my Caprice (has a knock sensor) I have the static timing way up and will ping occasionally under heavy load, but under normal driving no ping and I am getting 26mpg consistant with this beast.
Stock timing gives me about 19mpg and a large loss in responsiveness.

Also how does this apply to the pre-2005 GT's which from what I have been told require premium gas and do NOT have knock sensors?

Default RE: Custom Tune 89/93 Octane question.

I bought my CAI/tuner from Evolution Performance. Most tuners give you the option of 2-3 tunes to pick from based upon octane. I chose 87, 93, and 93 Extreme, because I have 93 available in my area. I have the 93 Extreme loaded on my car now. If I need to put in a lower octane fuel, I can return it to 87 as needed. But once you drive your car with the higher tune, you won't want to go back to 87.

I look at it this way - I buy about 15 gallons per week, or 60 gallons per month. If 93 octane costs 35 cents more than 87, then it's only $21 more per month for the add'l joy I receive from having my car run the way I think it should. And my car is a lot more fun now that I got a CAI/tuner.

my 2 cents...
