3.73 gears question?

3.73 gears question?
for those of you that have installed the 3.73 motive gearsin the 7.5" diff., did you have to install the notched pin shaft?
some vendors are telling me that it is not necessary but helps on the installation. If it is not
necessary I can save the $40 and spend it on the gear oil.....
any sugestions?
