I haven't heard anybody mention plugging a tire instead of patching. I've done that a couple times before. It's easier to do and I didn't have any problems with any of them. Like patching I would only do it in the tread area and not a sidewall.

You'll get differing opinions on this, but the right way to patch a puncture is to patch it on the inside. If you have a hole in he sidewall, replace the tire. Now I've heard people say they plug a tire and never had a problem. Well, I know people that smoke and never got lung cancer too, but I won't do it. It's your choice. There's not a single part on that car any more responsible for your comfort and safety than that tire.

After I posted my response and read your response, Goldenpony, out of curiosity I did some internet searching and see most people in the tire related industry would not recommend using a plug.

Most recommended removing the tire to inspect, and the combination of patch and plug.

I don't want anybody to do something that would be unsafe but I would be interested in hearing from others that have used just a plug what their experience was, good or bad.

My experiences (yes, more than one) with tire plugs is:
1) They will tend to leak over time
2) They can throw the tire out of balance
Do it right and have it patched.

Patches are ok if you dismount the tire, scuff the interior, apply glue and patch and roller it. Avoid the plugs that you push in from the outside. Properly applied the patch will last a lifetime. No reputable tire shop will patch a sidewall. In that case you need a new tire.
