Default Coolant Leak/Maintenance

I'm looking at replacing the T-Stat housing and components...

Has anyone looked at this kit before?

Is it made of plastic? It's hard to tell in the photo.
Why not get the new alluminum thermostat housing?

I just installed the metal housing on monday with a 180* thermostat and a new coolant temp sensor. Install is pretty straight forward.
