I went searching for that info couldn't find the excact one but this one is very close on the engine changes I read http://www.ford-trucks.com/specs/200..._explorer.html everyone I talked to including ford techs at dealers, Dave ( Ford tech) alsa Damage INC from Ford Modular message boards titled holycrap super charge your V6 now , (hey rygen I think you read this too) and what I read on the net Ford did not build a new engine for the Mustang but rather used the Colonge 4.0 Explorer/Ranger engine in the Mustang period.
So I am like 99% convinced this is the engine.

Later.
TJ,
Also, you asked if I had a chance to do a 1/4 mile run on my car, unfortunately I didn't make it that weekend, and the next weeking MIR was closed. I checked Old Dominion track and they are closed for the season as well.
But what I can get you is a dyno, I'm going in this Monday for a dyno session and will post results shortly.

From the article sighted:
Colorization added.
It seems the focus of these changes was emissions rather than performance. I wonder if this is a performance gain or loss? From what the dealership people told me there were no changes for 2006 except for the addition of the Pony Package.
Clean performance is standard on V-6 Explorer:
V-6 certified to same level of ultra-low emissions as the Ford Escape Hybrid. Explorer's standard 4.0-liter SOHC V-6 engine received significant improvements for the 2006 model year as well. Idle quality was improved by 50 percent, thanks to a new camshaft and spark plugs. New engine calibrations and improved emission controls cut smog-forming emissions by 74 percent compared to the previous model.
These improvements are expected to allow the 2006 Explorer V-6 to meet federal Tier II Bin 4 emissions requirements to achieve ULEV II status — the same federal tailpipe emissions standards as the Ford Escape Hybrid, the world's cleanest SUV.

You can be sure if those changes on the Explorer made it quicker too, that Ford would be boasting about it.
Pyrat: Great pic of your car in your sig

I like to find out for one way or the other if they are the same.
Ok I called Ford I asked for the part number on a 2006 Ford Explorer 4.0 right side camshaft and the part number on 2006 Mustang 4.0 right side camshaft.
Ford Explorer 4.0 Right side camshaft part # 5L2Z6250AA
Ford Mustang 4.0 right side camshaft part # 5L2Z6250AA
Same camshaft
I am getting the same part number. Rygn you know someone Kevin at KC Ford, can you ask him for the part # for the right camshaft on the 06 Explorer 4.0 & 06 Mustang 4.0 and post the numbers here to see if it checks out what I was told.
If anyone else could check on also and post would be nice.
Hi,
I just got my 2006 Mustang last Tuesday night. I ordered a 5spd manual transmission without ABS. I had it on the dyno at Alternative Auto on Saturday morning, and it made 182rwhp and 207ft./lbs. Tq. This was the first manual transmission 2005/2006 they have had come in. We mad some slight adjustments, and saw 187rwhp and 217ft./lbs. Tq. I plan to get a little more aggressive when we put on a new CAI. If anyone has any questions, you can email me at smithars724@yahoo.com.
