sorry, I meant that I never saw the green O/D light. I've always driven with O/D on at all speeds and I never saw that light...I know about the yellow O/D off one.
Now I'm confused. Whenever I switch off O/D, I get the "O/D OFF" light in red in my HUD.
Doh! I'll have to look, but I think mine is yellow---but maybe not I have three Fords, and all have O/D...so I might be getting confused between the different colors.

Ok here's my 2c. I always drive with the overdrive on. The car starts with overdrive on automatically. The computer does a good job shifting gears. When you approach 40-50 mph the car shifts into fifth gear. If you reach down and hit the OD/OFF button then it will downshift for you into 4th or a lower gear. If going up or down a really steep hill, merging onto the freeway, or passing someone I'll take the OD off.
The computer manages all that stuff, I would just leave it alone and drive the car.

Thanks Doug...I was going to post something like that a couple of minutes ago when I got pulled away from my desk. I figure that I'm just reading into it too much. It wouldn't really make sense for Ford to put it as the default setting if it would be bad for the car. I'll just turn it off if I'm going to go up a big hill or pass someone on the highway. At least now I know when I want to fell the car's real power to turn it off. It is kind of funny how different people have different colored lights. I have an '05 V6 premium vert and my color's yellow, Spartan's is red, etc...

i always thout o/drive means that your drive shaft is turning faster than your engine hence the term "overdrive" if it just meant the last gear then the old gm 2speed powerslide would have been an od transmisson

So if we routinely drive with Overdrive turned "off" (and the green OD light now shows on the dash), that means the car is constantly running at a higher rpm than it would otherwise (and limited to 4th gear) compared to if it had 5th gear as an option, which is putting more strain on the motor, and killing our gas mileage? That doesn't seem wise.
