Question Small oil leak running down pan coming from LARGE bolt on the SIDE??

Hey all and welcome!

I bought a frame off resto 79 f150 that has a rebuilt 89 5.0 engine in it with AOD.

Small slight problem. I noticed a small oil drip puddle in my garage. It doesn't appear to be originating from the small 16mm oil drain plug. It DOES appear to be running a small stream of oil from a much larger hexagonal type plug or bolt (Probably 2 inches wide bolt) that is higher up on the oil pan and on the SIDE. I tried searching EVERYWHERE to figure out the correct nomenclature for the plug/bolt looking thing on the oil pan. What is it called?

And originally I tightened down a 1/4 spin using an adjustable wrench with probably too much torque, thinking it would stop the leak. I do not believe I stripped the large bolt thingy, luckily, but was wondering what I should do? Drain all the oil from the small oil plug, followed by unscrewing the larger bolt/plug thingy, followed by epoxy? Teflon tape? Rubber gasket of some type? Plastic washer?

Many thanks!

I can provide pics of it all if need be, (and of the rig too)

Ok so its a block off plug. Check. Thanks

So I should get a new one? Or should I pull it out and try to use aforementioned "gasket" techniques?

And to submit a pic, they have to be uploaded onto a website such as photobucket, correct?

Thanks

I attempted something as a test. First i cleaned the block plug. I put some pipe thread compound around the outside of the plug/sensor bolt, waited 2 hours, went over top with some liquid nails white caulk. I know, probably a bad idea, but am givin it a try. You all think it could hold? Especially given the heat of hot oil in the pan? Dumb idea?

next time you change the oil, just take the plug out and clean up around it really well and then get some black rtv and make a nice gasket for it, cheap and effective.

Yes, after reading much about black rtv, I should have used that. The oil I swear is also leaking out the head of the bolt; it is slightly open, in that I wonder if there is a channel built internally for oil to flow into the bolt. I however covered the head with the stuff too. I shall see how she holds up I suppose. My only danger is wondering if the pipe compound/caulk combo would corrode the pan? Or trap a bit of moisture in it if it wasn't PERFECTLY dry, therefore rusting it out? Hmm

Thanks for the tips everyone, Im sure some of you all are shakin your head at this one, lol
