Default Speedometer Goes reverse direction HELP!

Could anyone tell me how to fix this? My 65 Mustang 6 cly, 3spd manual transmission has a speedo problem. I just bought this car and the old owner was no help. The problem is the speedo goes toward the Omph instead of showing proper road speed. It actually goes in the reverse direction, and it is driving me crazy which is a short trip.
Thanks in advance for any help!

The gear has the wrong direction. Type 3 or 3a. I believe you need a type 3a on you car.

it would drive me nuts as well.
you'd be better off disconnecting it from the dash until fixed.

Someone probaly put a 4 speed gear on the cable. The 4 speed is the only trans. with the cable mounted on the passanger side of the car. get the correct cable gear and it should be fine. you will need to try to figure out how many teeth you need on the gear though. check NPD catolog they have the gears and the foumala to figure it out.

Just curious... does the odometer go backwards?

no. they're usually made in such a way that odometer only goes forward.
Some even increase when you drive backwards.

So the only way on cheating with the odometer is to make it overturn (50000->99999->00000->25000 ...)

I was making a joke in reference to the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off (the movie referenced in the link). I figured the odometer wouldn't go backwards, but couldn't miss the opportunity to bring up the movie. If you haven't seen it, it's a great movie from the 80's.
