Default It's time to pick out a paint color...

It's been a long time since I first bought my '66 coupe. We've done lots of welding and grinding, front and rear frame repairs, new floors, cowl repair, patches to the wheel wells, trunk, fenders, inner fenders, and shock towers. I bought the car for $2800 originally (came with a spare set of Cragers in decent shape), and I've put about $800-1000 into parts so far. Now, it's finally time to think about painting it.

I'm a big fan of blue, especially a deep royal blue (http://www.threadandmore.com/ProdIma...yal%20Blue.JPG) or cobalt blue (http://www.phisick.com/images/bleed/...t-blue-101.jpg). Originally I was going to go for the GT350 Sapphire Blue, but a few pictures I've seen look way too light (others look perfect, but I'm not sure I want to gamble). I found a paint chip for a Bright Sapphire Blue off some newer model Ford that I liked, but without actually seeing it on a car it was a tough choice. Some people have recommended Viper Blue - it's nice, but again, not perfect.

Then I found this picture: http://www.cobracountry.com/cobra4sa...han-ia-BIG.jpg. The color? Sonic Blue.

What do you guys think, would Sonic Blue look nice on a '66 coupe? I probably won't be doing Le Mans stripes, but I might consider doing black on the tail light panel to give it some character.

Finally, the person painting it for me (my girlfriend's father, who's retired, used to do auto body, and has done an excellent job on all of the body work so far) is suggesting going with a cheaper acrylic enamel instead of polyurethane base coat / clear coat. The car is probably going to get chipped from stones in the road and whatnot anyway, so I don't care if it ends up being a 10-footer. However, I can get a decent quality urethane paint for about $100-150 more than the acrylic enamel, but it will be more work. Which would you go for?

Thanks.

That sonic blue looks a looks a lot like guardsman blue. A friend of mine had a 66 GT coupe that had been special ordered in guardsman blue, very nice.

well the more you pay for the paint the better its gonna look and stand.....you must stop somewhere though because no1 needs a 10000 dollar paint job but going too cheap doesnt always work in the long run because you may have to paint it again and again

Can't go wrong with any of them, BUT I like the Sonic Blue.

The sonic blue rocks but I can't help but be influenced by the Cobra and the great paint job.

Acapulco Blue Poly from 67 (not 68 or 69) is a similar color but looks deeper. It's hard to appreciate it online, but here's a sample:

And of course there's 69 Winter Blue Ploy...my color.

Keep in mind you won't get that same depth and shine out of an acrylic enamel, you need the clearcoat for that.
