You can narrow it down with a couple of simple tricks.
If you put a empty paper towel tube next to your ear and point the other end to different parts of the engine, it will help you determine where it's coming from. If the noise is coming from something on the outside of the engine, you may be able to find it in a few minutes.
If the noise is coming from inside the engine-get a long screwdrive (12" or more) or wood dowel and put it on different places on your engine with one end in your ear. You'll know pretty quickly if the noise is internal or external.
If you try this, make sure you don't get too close to anything that moves.
